The griffin is today’s ancient Egyptian demon!

This griffin comes from an ivory wand in the Metropolitan Museum (accession number 22.1.65). It is depicted with the head of a hawk, the body of a leopard and has a set of wings and human head protruding from its back. In its front paw it holds a large knife, as do many other demons found on wands.
